Ma che mi tocca sentire.

Training Film di 25 minuti realizzato nel 1967 dall’US Army Pictorial Center per gli allievi piloti destinati agli OH-6A Cayuse. Il filmato spiega in sintesi le caratteristiche e le capacita’ di questo delizioso e amatissimo elicottero da osservazione. Esso mostra anche lo splendido lavoro fatto dagli ingegneri della Hughes per ottenere un mezzo estremamente compatto, leggero, performante ed efficiente, ma al tempo stesso robusto e di semplice costruzione e manutenzione. Buona visione!

Dopo aver scippato gli Alenia C-27J all’Army National Guard, l’USAF sta nuovamente tentando di mettere i bastoni fra le ruote all’esercito, che (giustamente) sta cercando un sostituto per i vecchi bimotori C-23 Sherpa.

The U.S. Army and Air Force chiefs of staff are hashing out the details of an MOU on the light cargo lift mission.

If this all sounds familiar, it is. Recall that USAF Gen. T. Michael Moseley’s coming-out speech as the top Air Force officer at the AFA symposium in the fall of 2005. He took that opportunity to announce that the Air Force was pursuing a new light cargo aircraft procurement.

This proclamation was made oddly as the Army was in the midst of setting up its future cargo aircraft program, which was crafted to replace old Sherpas and provide more immediate access to commanders for cargo support.

So, the question today as the Army and Air Force both attempt to normalize their fleets after surging for war support for a  decade is: What is the right number of small cargo lifters for the direct support role? And, who should lead this role?

Army officials have long argued that an Army officer must lead this mission to ensure that Army commanders’ needs are the priority; they fear that the Air Force will de-emphasize Army unit requirements against the more strategic priorities of regional cargo movements of larger amounts of goods.

“de-emphasize”… termine interessante. Ma quanto e’ ridicola l’Air Force da 1 a 10?

Rieccoci di nuovo. Un altro strumento di propaganda per reclutare altri Talebani, e l’ennesimo PR nightmare per Marines, Pentagono e governo USA. Ecco cosa accade quando si ignorano completamente le conseguenze dei propri atti.

Si dice spesso che nei ranghi dell’US Marine Corps vi sia una maggiore comprensione delle problematiche COIN rispetto a quanto accade nell’esercito (intendo l’US Army). Beh, queste quattro teste di cazzo non devono aver imparato molto bene la lezione, sopratutto il furbissimo marine che – per farsi figo – ha avuto la brillante idea di caricare e condividere su YouTube il video che vedete sopra (per poi cancellarlo, assieme all’account, ma il danno ormai era fatto…). I quattro militi non sono “comuni” fucilieri dell’USMC (0300 Infantry), bensi’ Scout Snipers, ovvero un elite nell’elite. Insomma parliamo di gente selezionata, con un livello di preparazione e disciplina superiore alla media. Forse, ma la furbizia non e’ certamente fra le loro virtu’

Siamo nel 2012, non nel 2002;  certe stronzate dovrebbero essere evitate molto accuratamente. Mi domandavo poi una cosa: l’NCO che faceva? Se la rideva anche lui o era nel gruppo dei pisciatori solitari?

Evitero’ di comportarmi da finto indignato perche’, francamente parlando, nel contesto afghano questa e’ probabilmente una delle cose piu’ soft viste da dieci anni a questa parte. Un atto esecrabile, certo, ma non il peggiore. Si, lo so, si suppone che gli occidentali debbano dare l’esempio, blablabla, OK, d’accordo, ma l’Afghanistan non e’ il Regno del Mago di Oz e certi comportamenti non dovrebbero stupire piu’ di tanto (anzi…). Come del resto scriveva il Sergente dei Marines Alex Lemons sul Time:

Maybe it was also the kind of fighting, insurgency, that produced experiences like this. You fight ghosts (IEDs, booby traps, snipers, potshots, loudspeaker recordings) and when you finally get one enemy grunt who isn’t even in a uniform you choose to take out all the frustrations of fighting an invisible enemy on a lifeless but symbolic corpse.

Che pero’ ammonisce:

– War is not a moral agent. “War is hell, shit happens and trophies get taken,” is a copout from an irresponsible person. War doesn’t make anyone do anything because it is not a living thing.

People make war and they make choices in war. Most of these choices are made along the lines of rules of engagement, other war conventions, and training.

The Marine Corps doesn’t teach anyone to do this.

Choices were made and they were not good ones. This is what maintains our moral high ground. It doesn’t matter if the Taliban cut heads off and videotape them. (See pictures of the battle against the Taliban.)

The whole point, as I was told since 2001, was not to become like them, or to be comparable to them.
