Pur non avendo mai oltrepassato la fase prototipale, il Lockheed YF-12 rimane il piu’ grande (31 mt), pesante (63 lwt) e veloce (mach 3,35) intercettore della storia dell’aviazione. By Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, of course!

I cutaway artistici vintage hanno sempre un fascino particolare, non fa eccezione questa art apparsa su un numero di Popular Science degli anni cinquanta. Il DC-8 era un moderno e valido airliner, tuttavia rimase costantemente nell’ombra dal suo eterno rivale, il magnifico e versatile Boeing 707. A dispetto dello strapotere Boeing, il DC-8 riscosse comunque un buon successo commerciale e non furono poche le compagnie aeree che lo acquistarono, ivi inclusa la nostra “cara” Alitalia. Cutaway della nuova classe di LPD (Landing Platform Dock) San Antonio (LPD-17). Le 12 unita’ previste andranno a sostituire una quarantina di navi, in primis le omologhe della classe Austin (LPD-4).

Curiosita’
Una delle unita’ della classe San Antonio, e precisamente la USS New York (LPD-21), e’ diventata celebre per essere stata stata parzialmente costruita impiegando l’acciaio estratto dalle macerie del World Trade Center.

L’incidente e’ avvenuto lo scorso aprile sulla state Route 507, nei pressi di Spanaway, stato del Washington. Il blindato Stryker proveniva dalla vicina base di Ft. Lewis, sede della 4th SBCT, 2nd Infantry Division. Purtroppo per il conducente del pickup F150 (Gregory Wood, 55 anni) non c’e’ stato nulla da fare.
