Abstract: Design arrangement and mounting approaches, weight estimates, balance calculations, stress analyses, and helicopter performance predictions of an aerial artillery system utilizing two externally-mounted 105mm XM204 soft recoil howitzers on a CH-47C Chinook helicopter are presented. This design provides for all the firing modes and operational capabilities required by the Weapons Command, including the ability to offload one howitzer when the helicopter is hovering. The study includes an analysis of the structural integration of the weapons and aircraft including muzzle blast effects and airframe dynamic responses. A minimum adequate fire control system for air-to-ground firing and typical ground artillery fire control equipment was included.

LOL! In effetti e’ roba da far venire i complessi d’inferiorita’ pure all’AC-130
Cmq qui il discorso non e’ tanto sul numero di bocche da fuoco, ma sul calibro e la potenza di queste ultime! L’XM204 sparava poi le stesse munizioni dell’obice M102.

En passant: l’US Army testo’ anche AH-1G HueyCobra modificati ed armati con due cannoni s/r da 105mm tipo M40 (come quelli dell’Ontos fra l’altro).

anche i nazi a un certo punto hanno montato dei mortai (così li chiamavano) sui fw 190, ma era per attaccare i box di b17…
mettere delle bocche da fuoco così potenti sugli elicotteri per attaccare dei bersagli non induriti (tank o bunker) mi sembra una contraddizione…

Si, ma infatti e’ rimasto tutto a livello teorico. Se non sbaglio la Boeing costrui’ solo modelli in scala e niente di piu’. Tieni anche presente che tale studio di fattibilita’ e’ datato 1972, ovvero in un periodo in cui il missile controcarro *medio* possedeva gittata, potenza e precisione molto poco soddisfacenti (vedi ad es. i limiti dell’SS.11/AGM-22). Con la diffusione del potente TOW, che fra l’altro debutto’ lo stesso anno in Vietnam a bordo degli NUH-1B, progetti come il Chinook “Artigliere” non avevano semplicemente ragione di esistere, se non a livello di divertissement
