Tre magnifiche foto di Piazecki CH-21B “Shawnee”, il precursore del leggendario CH-47 Chinook. Questo elicottero a rotori in tandem, conosciuto anche come Workhorse, servi’ fra gli anni 50 e 60 in molte forze armate occidentali. Gli Shawnee furono anche i primi elicotteri a sbarcare in Vietnam. Giunsero a Saigon nel Dicembre del 1961 con la 8th e 57th Transportation Companies a supporto dell’Esercito Sudvietnamita.

Recentemente la US Army Aviation Heritage Foundation ha riportato in condizioni di volo un Bell AH-1F Cobra per conto della pattuglia Sky Soldiers, l’unica al mondo che effettua dimostrazioni di combattimento con elicotteri (ma non solo, vi sono tre programmi, World War II, Korean War e Vietnam War, piu’ lanci di paracadutisti, simulazioni di assalto aereo ecc ecc)

Comunque sia, il velivolo, dopo essere stato ridipinto ad Ozark con un elegante schema di rappresentanza, e’ stato esposto all’AAAA (Army Aviation Association of America) Convention a Nashville, Tennessee. Attualmente si trova a Blackwell FIeld,, ad Ozark, Alabama.

Le prime immagini del prototipo del nuovo elicottero da ricognizione armata, il Bell YRH-70, che il 20 luglio scorso ha completato i primi due test di volo (per un totale di 1 ora e mezza circa). La configurazione finale sara’ un po’ differente, ma “l’involucro” e’ quello che vedete. La torretta posizionata sotto il musetto e’ la Brite Star II, una versione migliorata dell’originale BS presente sugli UH-1 Yankee dell’USMC (www.flir.com).

Ne vedremo delle belle, sopratutto quando sara’ implementato il CAAS (Common  Avionics Architecture System), il piu’ avanzato sistema di comunicazione e navigazione oggi disponibile, nato per gli elicotteri del 160° reggimento  per operazioni speciali (MH47, MH60 e MH6).

L’Army prevede di acquisirne 368 esemplari.

Ringrazio il Chief Warrant di 4a Savell (il ragazzone ritratto di fronte al Bell nella prima foto… a reeeeally good guy del Directorate of Training and Doctrine Training Division, e i suoi superiori per aver concesso il rilascio delle foto. Il Chief Warrant in questione si occupa anche del programma LUH, recentemente vinto dalla Eurocopter.

A proposito di LUH, il neovincitore e’ stato ufficialmente designato UH-72A. Entro novembre dovrebbero consegnare il primo esemplare di serie. Ancora nessuna novita’ sul nickname…

Eurocopter e Bell in finale.

L’India tempo fa ha manifestato la necessita’ di sostituire l’intera flotta di decrepiti Alouette II e III, in loco noti come Chetaks e Cheetahs. Dopo una lunga battaglia, all’ultimo round sono giunti il Fennec AS550 (derivato dal francese Ecureil) e il Bell 407 (base dell’YRH-70 Ndr). Il vincitore si aggiudichera’ un contrattone da 500/600 milioni di dollari. Il requisito e’ pari a 197 macchine.
